Croydon Means Business
I was proud to launch Croydon Means Business this week. The £500,000 package of support will help local entrepreneurs and independent traders start, grow and thrive. Small businesses can apply for a £10,000 Empty Unit Activation Grant to transform unused spaces.
We are also introducing 12 weeks of business rates relief for new businesses moving into targeted vacant units, alongside a dedicated business concierge service to provide a single point of contact into the Council.
Independent shops can access a £5,000 improvement grant to enhance accessibility, appearance and energy efficiency. The programme will revitalise our high streets, bring empty units back into use and create jobs. Find out more.
The latest from Regina Road
Our plans to improve Regina Road are moving forward, with construction partner Lovell, set to begin work soon. We will be delivering up to 340 new homes, including 225 affordable homes, alongside new green spaces and play areas. This redevelopment is part of my commitment to make sure our residents live in safe and warm homes.

Recognising our architectural gems
Croydon has a long history and some fantastic architecture, which is why I am delighted to share that more than 60 historic buildings and structures have been awarded upgraded status by Historic England. This includes the rare Victorian fountain in the town centre, recently restored with support from Heritage of London. Other newly recognised sites include the Art Deco Marks & Spencer building and the sandstone façade of the former Allders department store. This recognition protects and preserves these much‑loved landmarks for generations to come. Find out more.
Taking pride in Croydon West
There is welcome news for residents comprising of these wards: West Thornton, Selhurst, Broad Green and Bensham Manor, as the area was allocated £20m of Government Pride of Place funding. This investment will be used to improve high streets and public spaces across the area. Residents will help shape how this funding is used. Find out more.
Blood Pressure project
It was great to visit the Croydon BME Forum Wellness Centre and hear about this initiative with London South Bank University, training local barbers as Blood Pressure Champions. By offering simple checks in trusted community settings, this work is helping to spot conditions early and tackle health inequalities by reaching people who may not otherwise come forward for testing.
Salvation Army Job Fair
I also visited the Salvation Army Employability and Community Fair at Croydon Citadel – a powerful example of how partnership working can support residents into work.
The ongoing support with weekly Employment Plus sessions offers practical help with CVs, job searches and one-to-one guidance. A strong example of supporting residents into work.
Little Pumpkins Nursery
I was delighted to officially open the new Little Pumpkins Nursery in South Norwood this week – a £1.7 million, state-of-the-art facility that will expand provision for local families.
Created by Croydon couple Anita and Dean Nicol, it is a strong vote of confidence in Croydon and an important investment in our children and young people, giving them the best possible start in life.
Flag raising
This week we raised the flag to mark Bangladeshi Independence Day outside the Town Hall, celebrating Croydon’s Bangladeshi community.
I also marked Autism Acceptance Day, recognising the importance of awareness and support across our borough.
Pre‑election period
Ahead of the local elections on 7 May, the pre‑election period begins on Monday (30 March). During this time, you will continue to receive your weekly Your Croydon newsletter, but it will not include a Mayor’s message in line with the election rules.
The Easter holidays start on Monday– wishing you a wonderful break. Check our What’s On section and the Culture Croydon and Libraries website for things to do. Have a lovely weekend.
