“Low Traffic Neighbourhood schemes were introduced in Croydon in May 2020, before I was elected Mayor.
Since becoming Executive Mayor in 2022, I have been clear that these schemes must reflect the priorities and experiences of local communities. That is why we removed a number of the physical road barriers that blocked streets, introduced free resident permits and carried out a further trial to review how the schemes were operating in practice.
Following a recent High Court judgement concerning six of these schemes, there were two options: to appeal the decision, which could take many months, or to accept the ruling and remove them.
After careful consideration, I have decided that Croydon Council will not appeal the judgement. The schemes have, therefore, been removed with immediate effect and enforcement activity has ceased on the affected streets.
I can confirm that residents who received a penalty notice whilst the schemes were in operation will be able to claim refunds, and we will update our website with information about the process in the coming days.”
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
